for Stephanie Williams
Pitch and Putt Golf Club members were heartbroken over the sudden loss of our President, Stephanie Williams, in January. As we pondered how to honor her legacy as a leader, avid golfer, and genuine decent person who was appreciated and loved by all who knew her, we decided to mount a memorial tournament in her namesake at Forest Park Golf Course. It was an undertaking of love, with all the members volunteering and support of the course’s staff and golf pro Richard
Sheppard, Jr. It was a monumental success!
On Monday, August 28, 2023, over one hundred and forty friends, family and golfers turned out. The weather was perfect. Everyone had fun. Foursomes competed for prizes. The program touched our hearts, especially when Stephanie's daughter, Shanae, shared stories of her mom, and her granddaughter was a co-announcer for winners of raffle tickets. Her husband, Ron, was pleased to see so many golfers and over the moon happy when we released live doves as a symbolic tribute to Stephanie's indomitable spirit. We will all miss her.
We captured photos of the day and hope they reflect the joy and peace of the fun-filled day. Enjoy the photos (see below).
Stephanie was a strong advocate for education and the catalyst for the club reviving its commitment to contribute to the Morgan State University's Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter’s Scholarship Fund. With reverence and pride, we announce the tournament raised over $10,000 for the scholarship fund.
You probably know that under Stephanie's leadership, our 85-year-old organization installed an interior interpretive educational wall exhibit and erected a permanent, free-standing exterior brick monument at Carroll Park that depicts the history and role of local African American golfers effecting social change for the City of Baltimore's open accommodation policies.
Stephanie brought so much joy to the game of golf! Her legacy will live on through the monument as well as the four local golf clubs that she loved so much.
